iOS 18 on the iPhone, what's changing in the new Apple system?

2024-06-17

iOS 18 - News and artificial intelligence from Apple

Apple at its conference on June 10, the company presented a series of innovations and changes that it has been working on in recent months. One of these innovations that is worth discussing is the latest version of the Apple operating system, number 18. What will iOS 18 bring? Will it be a typical "It's the future" from Apple or will the other manufacturers follow suit? Who will get the latest version of iOS and who will have to do without it? Let's take a look in this article!

Compatible models:

Screen and icons in iOS 18

One of the most noticeable changes is the extensive personalization of app icons and screen content. Users can now arrange the icons according to their preferences (just like on Android), change their size and even colors. The control center has also been redesigned. Widgets from third-party apps can now be added here, and existing buttons such as the flashlight or the camera on the lock screen can be replaced by others. Users of the iPhone 15 Pro can use the action button to call up widgets in the Control Center. In addition, there are changes in the photo gallery, effects in apps and the appearance of conversations between iMessage users and Android messages - now it looks more like conversations between iOS users.

RCS support for iMessage

One of the most anticipated additions in iOS 18 is support for Rich Communication Services (RCS) in the Messages app. RCS is an advanced communication standard that allows messages to be sent with enhanced features, such as read receipts, support for larger attachments and the ability to have more interactive and richer conversations. In terms of messaging, Apple has also introduced a scheduled messaging feature. You can select the day and time when the message will be sent to the recipient.

Changes in the apps

iOS 18 also brings a number of improvements to various integrated apps, increasing their functionality and ease of use. The Photos app gets new tools for editing and organizing photos, Maps offers more detailed information and better integration with location services, and Wallet is enhanced with new financial and ticket management features. All these changes are aimed at making the daily use of iOS devices even more intuitive and efficient.

New privacy and security options

iOS 18 brings significant improvements in the area of data protection by allowing users to additionally secure access to individual apps. Users can now protect apps from unauthorized access with Face ID, Touch ID or a PIN code. In addition, the operating system offers a new "Hidden Apps" function that allows selected apps to be completely hidden. These apps will not appear in search results, notifications or Spotlight, giving users full control over their privacy. iOS 18 also allows certain contacts to be hidden from apps, providing an additional layer of privacy protection.

Apple Intelligence - Artificial intelligence in the Apple version

The most important new feature of Apple, but at the same time nothing surprising on the market, is Apple Intelligence, i.e. the artificial intelligence implemented in the system. While AI on the electronics market is nothing exciting in itself, there is something to be said for choosing devices with exactly this AI from this manufacturer (more on this in a separate article). Unfortunately, some AI features such as generating graphics, help with texting and messaging, summaries of web pages or natural conversations with Siri will only be available on devices with the Apple A17 Bionic chip. So if you want to use these, you must have at least an iPhone 15 Pro.

Game mode for entertainment lovers

One of the new, exciting additions in iOS 18 is the "Game Mode". As the name suggests, this mode optimizes the device's performance for gaming by freeing up system resources, allowing for a smoother and more responsive gaming experience. This feature is particularly useful for gamers who demand maximum performance from their devices.

iOS 18 for which devices? System for many, innovations not for all

Apple will allow the new operating system on smartphones from 2018 and newer, so iOS 18 will be available for owners of iPhones from iPhone 11 and the cheaper 2nd and 3rd generation SE models. However, the novelty in the form of AI will only be available to owners of the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max. This is a somewhat unfair approach by Apple to "incentivize" the exchange of the device to a newer model. At the same time, Apple remains true to its tradition of updating older models that still "hold their own" and are equipped with what are considered to be decent components. iOS 18? Objectively pleasant, but exciting?

The latest version of the iOS 18 operating system brings many innovative features and improvements aimed at enhancing the privacy, performance and overall usability of the system. The introduction of new security options continues to keep the Apple ecosystem at a high level of data protection. The introduced game mode and support for RCS are new features that make iOS more versatile and better suited to the needs of modern users. Additional improvements in apps such as Photos, Maps and Wallet make the daily use of iPhone and iPad even more convenient and enjoyable. iOS 18 is a step forward in the evolution of Apple operating systems, giving users more control, better performance and new ways to interact. Apple iOS 18? Nice, but we want more!
