Touchscreen Getac S410 G3 Test

The Getac S410 model combines many features typical of consumer laptops, both in terms of CPU and GPU. The system can be configured from a version with a Core i3-7100U processor and a 768p display up to a variant with a Core i7-8650U processor, a dedicated GeForce GTX 950M graphics card, and a bright 800-nit 1080p screen.

The tested unit is a model equipped with a Core i7-8550U processor, integrated graphics, and a 768p display, which at launch cost between $1900 and $2100. Currently, it is available at the AMSO store for around 2000 PLN gross.

S410

The closest rivals of the Getac S410 in the category of 14-inch rugged laptops are the Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 and the Dell Latitude 14 7414 Rugged. In this review, we will compare the performance of the Getac S410 with its main competitors.

The Getac is larger and heavier than the Panasonic Toughbook CF-54 in every aspect. As a result, its lid is slightly stiffer and less prone to twisting compared to Panasonic's counterpart. The chassis is certified with MIL-STD-810G and IP52, meaning it is resistant to extreme temperature ranges, keyboard spills, and drops from up to 3 feet (approx. 90 cm).

The build quality is excellent – no noticeable creaks, defects, or unintended gaps. The hinges, allowing a 180-degree opening, are solid and prevent the screen from wobbling while typing. The rubberized carrying handle provides a better grip than the metal handle on the Toughbook CF-54.

The device stands out with an elegant design, featuring Getac’s signature matte finish in black and graphite colors, emphasizing its durability and professional character.

Why is the laptop semi-rugged?

The term "semi-rugged" may seem somewhat vague and difficult to define precisely, but no better term has been invented yet. In practice, semi-rugged means a device that is more durable than an average consumer or business laptop but without the excessive reinforcement characteristic of fully rugged devices.

Semi-rugged laptops are designed for users whose devices spend more time in the field than on desks. This type of equipment must be resistant to spills, shocks, and vibrations while also allowing comfortable use both at night and in bright sunlight. It should be efficient, offer long battery life, provide a rich set of connectivity options, and still be portable enough to carry anywhere. All of this should come at an affordable price, significantly lower than that of fully rugged models. This is a big challenge, but the Getac S410 passes the test with flying colors.

At first glance, the Getac S410 stands out from consumer laptops. It is designed for use not only in the office but also in tougher outdoor conditions. The built-in handle allows for convenient carrying without the need for an additional bag. All ports are secured with covers to protect them from dust and moisture, which is crucial in demanding work environments. The laptop's construction has been reinforced to withstand accidental impacts and drops. You could say that if the S410 were a vehicle, it would be an all-wheel-drive SUV – solid and ready for challenges, but not as extreme or expensive as military-grade vehicles.

In summary, the Getac S410 is a device that combines durability, functionality, and modern design, offering reliability both in the office and in the field. It is ideal for those who need more than a regular laptop but do not want to invest in military-grade equipment.

The basic configuration includes USB Type-A ports, HDMI, a 3.5mm audio jack, and RJ-45, with optional VGA and mini-SIM. The port layout is slightly better than in the Toughbook CF-54, as the rear ports are not blocked by the power cable.

Compared to the Toughbook CF-54, unfortunately, the arrow key layout remains small, which may be inconvenient. Keyboard backlighting is available only in higher configurations of the device.

Additionally, next to the power button, there are two auxiliary buttons, P1 and P2. P1 allows you to turn the screen on and off, while P2 activates the "Sunlight Readable" mode.

The small touchpad, measuring 8.5 x 4 cm, is only slightly larger than the one in the Toughbook CF-54 (8 x 4 cm). Nevertheless, cursor control feels limited, especially when scrolling vertically. Additionally, the touchpad does not support Microsoft Precision functionality, which may be disappointing.

The dedicated mouse buttons are stiffer and louder compared to the CF-54 model. Unfortunately, their operation is inconsistent – the right button is softer and less precise than the left one.

The processor's performance in CineBench R15 turns out to be about 1% lower than the average results for the Intel Core i7-8550U. This is due to the limited Turbo Boost potential in the Getac device. Nevertheless, the processor still significantly outperforms the previous-generation Intel Core i5-7300U, used in the Toughbook CF-54, thanks to its ability to handle more threads simultaneously.

During the CineBench R15 Multi-Thread continuous test, the initial score of 536 points drops to around 496 points after just one cycle. This means that maximum Turbo Boost is short-lived and cannot be sustained for extended periods. Nevertheless, for office applications, machine control programs, and combined with 16 GB of RAM and an NVMe SSD, the machine is highly efficient for such tasks.

Top-Level Security

The Getac S410 in its basic configuration offers advanced security solutions. It is equipped with a TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module) for data protection through hardware encryption, as well as a mechanical security feature in the form of a Kensington Lock, effectively protecting the device against theft.

For users with higher security requirements, optional features are available, such as: Fingerprint Scanner – enables quick and secure login using unique biometric data. Smart Card Reader – ideal for authorization in corporate and institutional environments. RFID Technology – provides contactless access to data and the device, which is especially useful in dynamic work environments. Windows Hello – advanced facial recognition that allows for instant and secure system login without the need for passwords.

Thanks to these solutions, the Getac S410 can meet the requirements of even the most stringent security policies, both in the business and public sectors. It is the ideal choice for users who need not only durable equipment but also one that guarantees maximum data protection.

The Getac S410 Generation 3 is a highly efficient machine that is useful on construction sites, fieldwork, production halls, and many other sectors where simply a solid, durable laptop is needed. If I were doing such a job, I would definitely consider purchasing this device, especially since it now costs a fraction of the price, yet remains fully functional and incredibly efficient.
